Simple Past (V2):

Expresses a completed action in the past.

மதியம் 1 மணிக்கு நான் மதிய உணவு சாப்பிட்டேன்.

Past Continuous (was/were + V-ing):

Expresses an action that was in progress at a specific past time or when another action happened.

Example: I was taking my lunch when he arrived.
அவன் வந்தபோது நான் மதிய உணவு சாப்பிட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தேன்.

7. Common Mistakes - பொதுவான தவறுகள்

  • ❌ They was taking class yesterday.
  • ✅ They were taking class yesterday. (Use 'were' with plural subjects like They, We, You)
  • ❌ I was took rest when he came.
  • ✅ I was taking rest when he came. (Always use verb-ing after was/were)
  • ❌ While I slept, the phone rang.
  • ✅ While I was sleeping, the phone rang. (Use continuous tense after 'while' for ongoing background actions)

8. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - அடிக்கடி கேட்கப்படும் கேள்விகள்

1. What is the basic rule for choosing 'was' or 'were'?

Use was with singular subjects: I, He, She, It and singular nouns.
Use were with plural subjects: We, You, They and plural nouns.

2. Can we use state verbs (stative verbs) in the Past Continuous Tense?

No. Stative verbs (e.g., know, understand, like, love, believe) express states rather than active processes. Instead of saying "I was knowing the answer," use Simple Past: "I knew the answer."

3. What is the difference between 'when' and 'while' in past sentences?

• While is followed by the ongoing action (Past Continuous): While I was cooking...
• When is followed by the short interrupting action (Simple Past): ...when the power went off.
