Story in English and Tamil

A farmer was driving his wagon on a muddy village road after heavy rain. The bulls found it very difficult to pull the wagon through the deep mud. At last, one wheel sank deep into a dent, and the wagon stopped.

The farmer got down from the wagon and looked at the stuck wheel. But he did not try to move the wagon. Instead, he blamed his bad luck and loudly called God for help.

விவசாயி வண்டியில் இருந்து இறங்கி, சிக்கிக் கொண்ட சக்கரத்தைப் பார்த்தார். ஆனால் வண்டியை நகர்த்த அவர் எந்த முயற்சியும் செய்யவில்லை. அதற்குப் பதிலாக, தனது துரதிர்ஷ்டத்தைப் பற்றி குறை கூறி, உதவிக்காக கடவுளை சத்தமாக அழைத்தார்.

God appeared and said, "Put your shoulder against the wheel and ask your bulls to pull. Do you think the wagon will move if you only look at it and complain? I will help you, but you must first help yourself."

கடவுள் தோன்றி, "சக்கரத்தில் உன் தோளை வைத்து, காளைகளை இழுக்கச் சொல். வண்டியைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டும் குறை கூறிக் கொண்டும் இருந்தால் அது நகரும் என்று நினைக்கிறாயா? நான் உனக்கு உதவுவேன். ஆனால் முதலில் நீ உனக்கு உதவ வேண்டும்" என்று கூறினார்.

The farmer followed God's advice. He pushed the wheel with his shoulder and encouraged the bulls to pull. Soon, the wagon came out of the dent and began to move easily.

விவசாயி கடவுளின் அறிவுரையைப் பின்பற்றினார். அவர் தனது தோளால் சக்கரத்தைத் தள்ளி, காளைகளை இழுக்கும்படி ஊக்கப்படுத்தினார். விரைவில், வண்டி பள்ளத்திலிருந்து வெளியே வந்து எளிதாக நகரத் தொடங்கியது.

The farmer felt very happy. He learned an important lesson: we must make an effort before expecting help from others.

விவசாயி மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சியடைந்தார். அவர் ஒரு முக்கியமான பாடத்தைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டார்: மற்றவர்களிடம் உதவி எதிர்பார்ப்பதற்கு முன்பு, நாம் முயற்சி செய்ய வேண்டும்.

Moral - நீதி

Self-help is the best help. God helps those who help themselves.

சுய உதவியே சிறந்த உதவி. தங்களுக்கு உதவி செய்பவர்களுக்கே கடவுள் உதவுகிறார்.

Common Grammar & Usage Mistakes

Tamil speakers often make prepositions and phrase-structure mistakes when expressing effort, condition, or passive complaints in English. Here are key mistakes to avoid based on this story:

  • "Sank into" vs. "Sank in"
❌ Incorrect: The wheel sank inside a dent.
✔ Correct: The wheel sank into a dent.
    💡 விளக்கம்: ஒரு பொருள் ஒரு பள்ளத்திற்குள்ளே அல்லது சேற்றுக்குள்ளே அமிழ்ந்து போவதைக் குறிக்க 'sank into' என்ற preposition-ஐப் பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்.
  • Idiomatic Usage: "Put your shoulder to the wheel"
❌ Incorrect: Put your hand on the wheel to work.
✔ Correct: Put your shoulder to the wheel.
    💡 விளக்கம்: இது ஒரு புகழ்பெற்ற பழமொழி/சொற்றொடர் (Idiom). கடினமாக உழைத்து முயற்சியைத் தொடங்குவதைக் குறிக்க 'Put your shoulder to the wheel' என்று சொல்ல வேண்டும்.
  • "Whine about" Usage
❌ Incorrect: He was whining for his bad luck.
✔ Correct: He was whining about his bad luck.
    💡 விளக்கம்: ஒரு பிரச்சனை அல்லது துரதிர்ஷ்டத்தைப் பற்றிப் புலம்புவதைக் குறிக்க 'whine about' அல்லது 'complain about' என்று பயன்படுத்த வேண்டும்.
  • "Unless" Conditional Structure
❌ Incorrect: Unless you don't make an effort, God will not help.
✔ Correct: Unless you make an effort, God will not help.
    💡 விளக்கம்: 'Unless' என்ற வார்த்தையிலேயே எதிர்மறைப்பொருள் (if not) அடங்கியுள்ளதால், அதைத் தொடர்ந்து மீண்டும் 'not' பயன்படுத்தக்கூடாது.
